Our Mission

About Pimento School

Pimento School, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation (Federal ID 35-1990935) dedicated to the restoration of the historic Pimento High School Building which is located about 7 miles south of Terre Haute, Indiana.

Specifically, our organization would like to restore this long-vacant, one-of-a-kind facility for use as a community center. We will serve families in Southern Vigo County and Northern Sullivan County.

Though our geographic location is somewhat rural in nature, we feel that there is an increasing need for a community center to serve the people of the area.

Many years ago, Pimento was a bustling little town with its own school and train depot as well as a number of small businesses. Time and economic decline have taken their toll and much work is needed to restore this historic building.

There are many program opportunities being discussed for the renovated facility. The first floor lends itself well to athletic programs as the gymnasium occupies the ground level area of the building. We would like to restore the gymnasium floor, bleachers and stage to be used as a multi-purpose room by the general public. The gymnasium area is large enough to accomodate weddings, public performances, service club meetings as well as several sporting activities including basketball, walking, gymnastics, volleyball and others.

A recent feasibility study has determined the building to be structurally sound. However, we are in great fear that the structure will soon be lost to deterioration if our renovation program is not undertaken in the very near future. To date, we have raised over $54,000.00 in grant funds, the bulk of which went toward roof repairs to stabilize the facility from further decay. Historic Landmarks of Indiana assisted us financially in the purchase of the property. We have raised over $15,000.00 in private donations to date and hope to continue to cultivate private donations from alumni. We firmly believe the facility will be self-sufficient once we make the necessary capital improvements required for the structure to be made safe, clean and comfortable for the general public. The estimated cost of the total restoration is $319,000.00. Of course, your donation is tax deductible.
